What is MARES?

MARES stands for "Malaysian Amateur Radio Emergency Service Society", a non-profit, non-government organisation located in Petaling Jaya, Selangor, Malaysia. MARES members consists of amateur radio enthusiast,  who volunteered to be ready at ready to provide communication service in time of Disaster, when normal communication channels are either down or congested.

MARES Objectives and Vision.

The objective of the society is:

  1. To provide communication Service on a wide scale of response in times of disaster such as hurricanes, to multiple casualty accidents, to large fires and hazmat incidents to plane crashes, when regular communication channels are either down or congested. Our goal is to promote efficient communication system and; 
  2. To setup emergency communication at any disaster area when required;
  3. To help the Search And Rescue Team to give communication link from disaster/incident area to the Emergency Operation Center.
  4. To provide a communication link between Civil Defence, Malaysian Red Cresent Society, Bomba & Penyelamat, Police, TUDM, DCA and other organizations who are  involved in a Search & Rescue Operation.
  5. To promote the general advancement of the science and practice of Radio Communication and to facilitate the exchange of information and ideas on these subjects among its members and to obtain the maximum liberty of action consistent with safeguarding the interest of all concern.
About Amateur Radio

From Malaysian Communication and Multimedia Commission (MCMC), Communication and Multimedia (Spectrum) Regulation 2000, amateur radio is defined as:

Radiocommunication service (covering both terrestrial and satellite) in which a station is use for the purpose of self training, intercommunication and techical investigation carried out by authorized persons who are interested in radio technique solely with a personal aim and without any pecuniary interest.

Millions of radio amateurs communicate daily with each other directly or through relay systems and amateur satellites. Amateur service may provide alternative or emergency communication in time of natura disasters. Radio amateur communication able to provide support communications during the disaster where commercial communications is unavailable, due to the uncomplicated deployment of an amateur radio station.

Who will able to help me in becoming an amateur radio members?

There are Amateur Radio Clubs through out the country, willingly to help and educate public members in becoming an amateur radio members. Among them,

1. MARES (Malaysian Amateur Radio Emergency Service), in Petaling Jaya, Selangor.
2. MARTS - Malaysian Amateur Radion Transmitter Society, sole body representing Malaysia in IARU (Intenational Amateur Radio Union)
3. In the Northern region, ASTRA (Persatuan Radio Amatur Melayu Utara Semenanjung Malaysia), PARTS (Perak Amateur Radio Transmitter's  Society) and PARC (Penang Amateur Radio Club).
4. For East Coast, a number of clubs exists. Among them, PERAMAH (Persatuan Radio Amatur Pahang), PEMANCAR (Kelab Radio Amatur dan Rekreasi Terengganu), and few local district clubs such as Temerloh and Bera Radio Club.
5. Down South, JASRA (Jalur Selatan Amateur Radio Group), Segamat Ham Club, and NESRAC (Negeri Sembilan Amateur Radio Club)
6. In Sabah - BARC (Borneo Amateur Radio Clubs), SARS (Sabah Amateur Radio Society)  and KARTS (Kinabalu Amateur Radio Transmitting  Society)


Amateur Radio and Disaster Communication in Malaysian History

Amateur radio members (or fondly known as ham members), has been avtively involved in Disaster Communication support, since 1976, when the big flood hit Kota Bharu, Kelantan. Ham radio members were called to provide communication support when all other communications were cut off.

In 11 December 1993, during the Highland Tower tragedy, ham radio members were again valled to assist and providing communication support between the disaster site and Kuala Lumpur General Hospital. The service provided by ham members was for a duration of 5 days, 24 hours a day.

In 1994, fire broke out at the Subang International Airport Air Trafic Controller Tower. Ham Radio members were called to assists in communication between aircraft and ATIS - Air Trafic Information Service.

While in 1997, Malaysian Civil Defense Department (JPA3) from Melaka and Negeri Sembilan, has requested support from ham radio members, in preparation of La Nina fenomena. A number of ham radio operators were prepared in strategic location, to assist in event of disaster strikes.

In the month of February 1997, ham radio members was called to assist JPA3 from Negeri Sembilan, during search and rescue operation (SAR), with Royal Malaysian Police, Department of Civil Aviation (DCA) and Royal Malaysian Air Force (TUDM). This was conducted in search of missing Cesna aircraft, which crashed in the jungle of Mantin, Negeri Sembilan.  An emergency communication station was set up to assist JPA3 between the crash site and JPA3 offices in Seremban and Kuala Lumpur.

Fast forward to year 2002, the national Red Cresent Society has requested an emergency communication assistance between Kuantan and Kuala Lumpur, during a big flood that hit Kuantan.

In year 2005, MARES has giving assistance in relaying emergency messages from Banda Aceh,  to Medan in Indonesia, during the Tsunami disaster that hits Indonesia, Malaysia, India, Sri Lanka and few other countries.

In the month of December 2006, MARES, together with Yayasan Salam, has organized more than 5 disaster relief operation, to assists the victims of flood in Segamat, Kluang, Yong Peng and Batu Pahat, in Johor. Besides providing emergency communication assistance, MARES has distribute food, clothing and emergency relief support to the victims. in December 2007, MARES also has been giving emergency communication assistance towards the flood relief center in Temerloh,  Pahang, which was affected by the flood.
